Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II Karim Will Be The 123rd Patriarch

Patriarch Elect Ignatius Aphrem II KarimPatriarch Elect with Catholica Bava
Patriarch Elect Karim ThirumeniPatriarch Elect with HB Baselios Thomas I
The Universal Synod of the Syriac Orthodox Church met at St. Jacob's Monastery, Atchaneh, Lebanon on Monday, March 31, 2014 to elect a new Patriarch.

As per the constitution of the SO Church, Catholicose HB Baselios Thomas I chaired the meeting. Election was conducted by HB and the Patriarch Locum Tenens. All the eligible archbishops who can vote was present except for the Archbishop of Alleppo, who was kidnapped last year and whose whereabouts are not known.

The Universal Synod elected Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim, archbishop of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch for the Eastern United States of America, as the 123rd Patriarch of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church.

On consecration, the 123rd Patriarch will be known as Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II Karim.

The Patriarch-elect's family has a long connection with Malankara. Mor Kurillos Yuyakim, who lived in Malankara from 1846 to 1874, and is interred at the Mulanthuruthy Marthoman Church, is his great-great-grand uncle. Mor Kurillos Yuyakim was the key spiritual leader of the Syriac Church during the troubled years that lead to the schism with the Marthoma Church. In fact, Mor Cyril was given that name from this connection.

Karim Thirumeni was a familiar face to all of us in the US. He is a very close friend of Theethose Thirumeni and attended all the important functions in our diocese including most of family conferences.

He was a very efficient Metropolitan. They are building a new diocesan center with a budget over $11 million in NJ. This is, in addition to the beautiful HQ they have in Teaneck, NJ.

He was a close disciple of the Alleppo thirumeni who was kidnapped in Syria last year; his whereabouts are not known. It is generally agreed that if Alleppo bishop was present, he would have been a shoe-in for the next Patriarch. Karim thirumeni had been working very hard in Washington, DC to get help regarding this abduction.

I had met Karim thirumeni several times. In 2012, I had lunch with him and Theethose Thirumeni at Detroit. HE is a very likable person and has good PR-skills (like the LL Makariose thirumeni of IOC).

Please pray for the new Patriarch elect. (Enthronement on May 29, 2014)

St. Gregorios Cancer Hospital and Institute, Chelad, Kothamangalam

One of a long time dream of our own Rev. Fr. Dr. Gheevarghese Kunnathu, MD was to establish a full fledged Cancer Hospital in Kerala. One of the obstacles standing on the way was to find a team to coordinate the work in Kerala. We hope that his dream will be materialized soon. The foundation stone for the new Oncology Hospital was laid by HB Baselios Thomas I in the property acquired for the Hospital in Chelad, near Kothamangalam on Saturday, April, 14, 2012.

Malankara World
A Service of St. Basil's Syriac Orthodox Church, Ohio
Malankara World's focus is on our families. We want to help our families. Since family is a microcosm of church, it will have everything that a church focused website will have. But there will be more. We will cover issues that are important to families. What are the things that keep our members awake at night? Is that about their children? taking care of old aged parents? Relationship with their spouses? Breakdown of marriage? Health issues? Balancing work, family and spiritual life? Managing stress?

We will use a combination of technology and harnessing the resources of our people within our church to do that. The website has currently over 8,000 articles with more than 80% of them indexed in Google. A weekly Malankara World Journal has published over 90 issues. This has subscribers in all corners of the earth.  To learn more, visit Malankara World website

Baselios Church at The Malankara Archdiocese Silver Jubilee Convention

July 22-25, 2010, Somerset, NJ

Baselios Church participated in a big way in this year's convention. Teams from our church competed in the Cultural Competition and in Choir Competition. We got a coveted spot in the historic 25-inmel qurbana. Our church members were the active members who served many injured and sick as part of the Emergency Medical Team. The official webmaster for the convention was our member and people could not say enough about the website. And the list goes on and on...

Dr. Jacob Mathew, Secretary of Baselios Church, Honored

See the photo album

Silver Jubilee Convention is over. And what a convention it was! It was historic in every sense of the word. And Baselios Church, Cleveland was an active participant.

Our church was the only church from about half dozen churches that started in the archdiocese that actively participated in every aspect of the convention - from top leadership, to sponsorship, to participating in both the choir and cultural competitions. They were all capped by participation in the historic 25-inmel qurbana. Dr. Jacob Mathew was the altar assistant in altar #11. (This was a very coveted spot in the qurbana as everyone from the big churches, some with more than a quarter century of experience serving in the altar wanted to get a role out of the 25 available ones and were left standing at the steps of the altar platform. To make it more interesting (although I didn't know it at that time), Dr. Mathew was given the left most altar in the row. Our church gives big importance to the left side. The senior most occupies this coveted spot and the junior most occupies the right most slot. Most of the altars in front were manned by Rev. Deacons who come higher in spiritual hierarchy.) God indeed works in mysterious ways. There is more to this story. ....
