Malankara's Mythical Minefields

Debate between Georgy S. Thomas, Bangalore and Very Rev. Kuriakose Moolayil

Issue 1: The church is universal. Therefore, to stress on one's national heritage is unchristian

Issue 2: Autocephaly is an exclusively Byzantine concept and is alien to the Oriental Orthodox

Issue 3: The demand for co-equal status between the Catholicos and the Patriarch cannot be entertained

Issue 4: Even if the concept of autocephaly exists within the Oriental Orthodox tradition, it would serve no purpose in Malankara.

Issue 5: The Indian Orthodox Church is legally an autocephalous entity.

Issue 6: The Catholicos of the Jacobite faction in India is the no.2 in the universal Syriac Church.

Issue 7: The Patriarch enjoys only spiritual overlordship and has no temporal authority over the Indian wing of the Syriac Church.

Issue 8: Throne of St. Thomas was unheard of before the 1970s,

Issue 9: HH Patriarch Abdul Masih II didn't have the authority to consecrate a Catholicos for Malankara in 1912.

Issue 10: Ougen Bava conducted himself in utter disregard to the pledges given by him at the time of consecration

My Own Vision of The Ultimate: Why am I an Eastern Orthodox Christian?

Orthodox Spirituality presents the process of a Christian’s progress on the road to perfection in Christ, by the cleansing of passions and the winning of the virtues, a process which takes place in a certain order. A Brief Introduction to the Holy Qurbana (The Liturgy of St. James)
The Liturgy envisages a cosmic worship, involving the heavenly hosts, all of creation, and the Church constituting of all its believers, those who have departed, the living and those yet to come. The worship has, as its model, the worship of God in heaven. And to create this effect, the Church uses physical gestures, the use of incense and the beautifully embroidered altar covering and vestments of the celebrant. Along with its simplicity and brevity, this liturgy remains one of the most beautiful expressions of worship in all of Christianity.

Holy Communion
It is our central act of worship and sacrament of sacraments. It is the perfection of all other sacraments. St James, half-brother of our Lord and the first bishop of Jerusalem, was the first to conduct it and form a written liturgy in AD 37. Syrian Orthodox Church has a wealth of about 80 liturgies. All the liturgies are based on St James liturgy but nevertheless St James liturgy is the finest, the first and the most important of all.

The Malankara Church: Orthodox Syrian or Syrian Orthodox?
As far as I know of, there are two major churches in the United States that claim to be Malankara Orthodox. One refers to itself as Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church. The other is the The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Is it possible that both sides belong to the same church or that both have the right to refer to themselves as Malankara Orthodox Churches.

Concept of Trinity and the Role of Women in Church
The revelation of the Holy Trinity, through the Bible and then through the reflections of our Church fathers has profound implications for our life today. Are we loosing our Older Generation also along with our Younger Generation?
I think the main reason for such migration is people's loss of faith in the foundation of these Churches- mainly 'Apostolic Succession' and 'Sacraments'. The migrants also point out that they do not need saints as there need to be no one between themselves and God.
